Anton Gerner

Anton Gerner is an award-winning Australian furniture designer and craftsman renowned for exceptional timberwork, traditional joinery and an uncompromising attention to detail.

Working from his Melbourne workshop in Hawthorn East, Anton has spent more than 30 years creating beautifully crafted furniture and objects using fine Australian and imported solid timbers and veneers. Traditional techniques including dovetail and mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-laid veneers and intricate timber inlays are combined with contemporary design to create pieces intended to endure for generations.

Anton personally selects materials for their grain, colour, texture and individual character, allowing the natural beauty of the timber to become an integral part of each design. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Australia, with two significant pieces acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria for its permanent collection.

Becker Minty's curated Anton Gerner collection focuses on his handcrafted timber boxes, including pen boxes, document boxes and decorative storage pieces. Many are created using exceptional timber and veneer offcuts retained from decades of bespoke furniture making, giving valuable materials a new purpose rather than allowing them to go to waste.

From richly figured Fiddleback Blackwood and Burl Myrtle to Eucalyptus and Macassar Ebony, each piece celebrates the individuality of natural timber. Variations in colour and grain ensure that no two pieces are exactly alike.
