Dominic Kuneman is a multidisciplinary Australian photographer and designer, currently working between Sydney and Los Angeles. Dominic holds a Bachelor of Design in Residential Interiors and worked as a freelance interior designer for ten years. In 2018 he was approached to assist on a feature film in Sydney and is now working in the film industry as a set dresser.
Throughout his creative career photography has remained a fundamental part of his practice. His experience in design informs his decisions around composition, light, colour and subject, often considering how the image will sit in an interior setting. Since detouring from his work as an interior designer, he has become increasingly interested in ‘undesigned’ real-world spaces, the moods they evoke and the unintentional humour often found in these scenes- if you pause and look close enough.
Signs in Southern California is a body of work Dominic created over the Spring and Summer of 2023. Signage, in all its forms, is an integral part of the cultural identity of California. Dominic is drawn to the quiet nostalgia of a neglected neon, the inherent character of forgotten fonts, and monolithic billboards suspended in the sky like religious monuments. This series captures seemingly banal moments, seeking to reveal the art behind the signage and the spirit intended by its original creators.
