Geometric Abstract Painting

Tara Schyer is a Melbourne-based visual artist whose work explores interconnectedness and the relationships between people and the spaces they inhabit. She is interested in the harmony between connection and division, closeness and distance. Working predominantly with acrylic, oil and pencil, Tara’s geometric abstract paintings combine clean lines with a diverse and expressive palette. Her starting point is photography. She captures light and shadow in the natural world, focusing on the negative spaces to find new shapes which are not immediately apparent but essential to the whole picture. The essence of these negative spaces has been central to her work for the past decade, which remains simple, stripped back and elemental.

Tara studied painting and drawing at the Melbourne Studio of Art in 2014 and painting techniques at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2016. She has since exhibited in numerous exhibitions, including the VCA Group Exhibition (2016), Linden Postcard Show (2017), and as a finalist in the Omnia Art Prize (2024, 2019, 2018). Her work has been featured in print publications, including Art+Edit magazine (2024, 2020) and House & Garden’s Top 50 Rooms (2023). Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Justin Art House Museum.
