Liam Nunan is a painter of portraiture, figure, still life and landscape. His practice is grounded in observation, usually working from life or en plein air. His paintings explore psychological states and the inner lives of his subjects, whether himself or others. His most recent work examines myth, fragility and anxiety through the male figure, combining personal experience with broader cultural concerns. Rather than pursuing fixed meanings, Liam aims to create paintings that engage viewers on an emotional and subconscious level.
Liam originally trained as an actor and worked in theatre for over two decades, before turning to the visual arts in 2019. Since then he has earned widespread recognition for his work, most recently as a finalist in the 2026 Archibald Prize.
In 2019 Liam won the prestigious Lester Prize for portraiture. He is a regular finalist in significant national prizes, including the Mosman Art Prize (2026, 2023), Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2022), and Brisbane Portrait Prize where he was awarded the Packer’s Prize in 2023 and 2022, and Highly Commended in 2021. He was the second recipient of the Becker Minty Exhibition Award at the 2025 Paddington Art Prize.
