Product description

This artwork is from Thomas Bucich's ongoing sculptural series 'Meditations on the Icarus Effect'. Read the artist's statement below.

"The myth of Icarus is usually understood as a warning against reckless ambition; the consequences of flying too high, reaching too far. But I am interested in the other side of that impulse. Without the desire to rise, Icarus never flies.

These sculptures are part of an ongoing series that explores the tension between aspiration and consequence, and asks what drives our instinct to reach beyond ourselves, to risk, imagine, create and become something more. The same desire that allows us to move beyond our limitations can also leave us open to failure.

My sculptures depict wings in various forms. They twist, unravel, fragment and re-form. It is not always clear whether they are collapsing or emerging, falling or preparing to rise. I chose to create these two sculpture from steel. They are plasma cut by hand, mimicking the action of drawing or painting. Here, charcoal and ink is replaced with electricity and air, which cuts through the steel. This raw, industrial material represents the weight of ambition, while gold leaf reflects it's dazzling promise."
