Product description

This artwork is from Juli Balla's 2015 exhibition "Where the Sidewalk Ends".

The works in this exhibition are based on street photography from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Balla was also influenced by film stills of the same era. The photographs themselves become film stills, as they conjure more questions than answers. Balla says, “It intrigues me why people are so fascinated by documentary photography from another period of time. The images immediately take on a sense of mystery. As in a film still, the images evoke a feeling of suspended animation, while one tries to decipher what has just happened or about to happen.”

Balla has created a colour palette reminiscent of feature films shot in Technicolor. Stylist Janai Anselmi meticulously assembled an authentic vintage wardrobe for each era. This provides a strong visual element throughout. This series was styled, shot, printed and framed in Australia. The photographs are printed on archival rag art paper with a white handling border of 6cm (not visible when framed).
