Andrew Wilson

Andrew Wilson's series of limited edition fine art prints, titled Custodian, distills over a decade of photographic documentation across Tasmania, in particular the coastlines and coast-dwelling residents of his island home. Similar to a painter's process, these images are digitally brushed together in multiple layers to create dynamic, hyper-real compositions. This process, known as digital compositing, allows Andrew to compile elements from various images to emphasise the drama of the Tasmanian coast and create a sense of narrative in the work.

This series is a powerful and deeply personal reflection on the notion of custodianship. He says, “In a place like Tasmania, the intersection between man and wilderness fills your field of vision. Even in our largest city Hobart, the narrow boundaries of our human presence are closeted by the flow of the River Derwent and the granite pillars of Mount Wellington’s Organ Pipes. This lifelong connection to nature has imbued me with a desire to care for the wilderness around me. I don’t desire to own it, I just want to do what I can to make sure it remains a part of my vista, my daughter’s and the generations that follow.”

Andrew is highly regarded for his depth of visual storytelling, craft skills and striking compositions as a commercial photographer, published author and visual artist. His much-loved publications include the illustrated coffee table books ‘Old Sea Dogs of Tasmania’ 1 & 2, ‘Coast Tasmania’ and ‘Blue Water Classics’. He began his association with Becker Minty in 2023.
